GROWER ASSISTANT
We are looking for an energetic, hard-working person to assist our flower farm in daily tasks on a part-time basis, from March through November/December 2026, and beyond.
Prospect Hill is a small cut flower farm, producing over 40 types of flowers using sustainable growing practices, on about two acres in production in Louisa County. Now in our twelfth year, we supply blooms to local florists and designers in central Virginia, including the grower-owned cooperative River City Flower Exchange, and to customers at the Farmers Market at St. Stephen's in Richmond. We are members of the Virginia Association for Biological Farming and the Association of Specialty Cut Flower Growers.
The ideal applicant is:

Positive, observant, and a quick learner

Proactive, dependable, likes to work outside

Willing to work in all types of weather (90 degrees, rain, cold) and get dirty

Able to work as part of a small team or independently

Able to work fast and efficiently, on a variety of tasks

Enjoy doing physical labor, working with your hands, this is hard work!

Willing to be on your feet for extended periods of time
-
Carry out repetitive tasks and lift heavy objects (50 lbs.)

Interested in growing organically/sustainably

Enthusiastic about local flower/food movement
-
Able to commit for the entire season (March-November)

Has farm/commercial growing/nursery experience (preferred, not required)

Has basic customer service experience, enjoys interacting with farmers market customers
Responsibilities include:
-
Soil preparation, cultivation, spreading compost
-
Cutting down and clearing out finished plants and beds
-
Sowing seeds, transplanting, and weeding
-
Assist with fertilizing, pest and disease control, and high tunnel management
-
Assist with making bouquets
-
Harvesting and processing flowers for orders
-
Assist with sales and help customers a couple of Saturday mornings each month at our stand at the Farmers Market at St. Stephens in RVA, end of March-October

Use hand tools and small equipment as needed

Carry out farm maintenance tasks
-
Other duties as assigned
Part-time position, approximately 15-25 hours a week, during 2-3 days a week. Pay commensurate with experience, $15-$17 hour. Plus plenty of flowers!
